Steps for Individual Tax Return Filing in Bangladesh
Step 1: Overview of Individual Income Tax
In Bangladesh, individuals must file an income tax return annually. To do so, you must obtain an Electronic Tax Identification Number (E-TIN) issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR). For this, you need your National ID, Passport, or legal proof of residency.
Step 2: Scope of Income Taxation
Taxation depends on your residency status:
- Residents are taxed on global income.
- Non-residents are taxed only on income earned in Bangladesh.
Step 3: Determining Residency Status
An individual is a resident if:
- They have stayed in Bangladesh for more than 182 days in a fiscal year, or
- They have stayed for 90 days in the current year and 365 days across the previous four years.
Non-residents earning no income in Bangladesh are exempt from local tax filing.
Step 4: Taxable Income and Rates
Taxable income includes:
- Salary
- House property
- Business or profession
- Agriculture
- Capital gains
- Other sources

Step 6: Filing Deadline
Tax returns must be submitted by 30th November for the preceding fiscal year.

Taxes are payable through:
- Advance Income Tax
- Tax Deducted at Source (TDS)
- Direct payment on filing day
Step 8: Required Documents
- Income details
- Investment proofs
- Asset and liability statements
Step 9: Consequences of Non-compliance
Failure to file taxes leads to penalties and surcharges. Many regulatory processes require proof of tax filing.

- Residency applications
- Departure of expatriates
